Questions
What English level do I need for a UK visa?
It depends on the route. Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual: B2 in all four skills. Student: B2 at degree level, B1 below. Family: A1, then A2. Settlement: B1 in speaking and listening, rising to B2 from 26 March 2027. Citizenship: B1 in speaking and listening.
When did the Skilled Worker English level change to B2?
For applications from 8 January 2026. People who had the visa before that date and are extending or updating it still need B1, which they have already proved.
Will I need B2 English for indefinite leave to remain?
If you apply on or after 26 March 2027 on most routes, yes: B2 in speaking and listening, unless your visa was granted on B2 evidence or you are exempt.
Which English tests are accepted for UK visas?
Only Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) from approved providers: IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills, LanguageCert SELT tests, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home, Trinity ISE and GESE in the UK, and PSI Skills for English outside the UK. Results count for two years.
Who does not need an English test?
Nationals of the majority English-speaking countries on GOV.UK's list, people with a degree taught in English, and on some routes people with a UK school qualification in English. For settlement, family and citizenship, people aged 65 or over are exempt too.
