Typing or handwriting? Time yourself
The only real choice is how you write. Whichever is faster leaves more of the Writing hour to plan and check.
Type for one minute
Many cities are trying to cut traffic by making public transport cheaper. Supporters say fewer cars would mean cleaner air and shorter journeys. Critics reply that low fares cost a great deal and that people will only leave their cars if buses and trains are also frequent and reliable. Both sides agree that the answer depends on the city.
Copy it by hand for one minute
Use a pen and paper and a phone timer. Then count the words you wrote.
Which suits you
- IELTS on computer
- You type faster than you write, you edit as you go, or you need results quickly. It is also the only route to One Skill Retake.
- Writing on Paper
- You write faster or plan better by hand, and your centre offers it. Reading and Listening are still on screen, so practise them that way.
- The paper test
- Only where a centre still runs it. Results take longest, on the 13th day.
- Either way
- Speaking is the same live interview with an examiner, and the bands mean the same to universities and visa offices.

Questions people ask
Is IELTS on computer easier than on paper?
No. The questions, timing and marking are the same. IELTS says scores with Writing on Paper are comparable with the paper test, overall and in each band.
How long do IELTS on computer results take?
1 to 5 days after the test, on ielts.org. IDP India says most of its computer results arrive within 2 days.
Is the Speaking test on a computer?
No. In every version Speaking is a conversation with a live examiner, in the room or, at some centres, by video call. Only IELTS Online is taken from home.
What is Writing on Paper?
An option within IELTS on computer, in selected countries. Listening and Reading stay on screen; you write both Writing tasks in pen on an answer sheet. Results come within 5 days, and the Test Report Form does not show that you chose it.
Is the paper-based IELTS test ending?
Yes. IELTS announced that from mid-2026 it will no longer offer a paper-based test, with exact timing by country. Paper results already issued stay valid for the recommended two years.
Does IELTS on computer cost more?
Usually the fee is the same. In India both cost INR 19,000; in Egypt Writing on Paper costs EGP 11,220 against EGP 10,200 on computer.
Can I use One Skill Retake after a paper test?
No. One Skill Retake follows IELTS on computer, within 60 days. If you chose Writing on Paper, the retake must be Writing on Paper too.
