Task Response
Every part of the question is answered well. The position is clear and developed, and the ideas are relevant, extended and supported, with only an occasional lapse.
Coherence and Cohesion
Information follows a logical order and every kind of linking is handled well. Paragraphing is sufficient and suitable.
Lexical Resource
A wide range of words is used fluently and flexibly to give precise meaning. Less common words are used skilfully, with occasional slips in word choice or collocation, and spelling errors are rare.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
A wide range of structures is used. Most sentences are error-free, and errors are occasional.
Listening and Reading: every mark counts
- Mind the word limit
- At band 8 you can lose only a few marks, and an answer one word over the limit loses its mark even when it is right. Check the word limit, your spelling and plurals on every completion answer.
- Read ahead
- You hear each recording once. Use any time before a part to read its questions and predict the kind of answer: a number, a name, a place.
- Keep the clock
- In Reading, give each section about a third of the hour. Mark a hard question, move on and come back, rather than losing three minutes on one mark.
Writing: tips by criterion
- Task Response
- Answer every part of the question and give one clear position from the introduction to the conclusion. Develop each main idea: the point, the reason, an example, what follows.
- Coherence and Cohesion
- Let the argument carry the links. Refer back to the last idea instead of opening with Moreover, and give each paragraph one central idea.
- Lexical Resource
- Choose the exact word for the idea and use less common words only when you are sure of their collocation. At band 9 errors are only rare slips.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- Use complex sentences where the idea needs them, then save five minutes to find your own errors. At band 8 most sentences are error-free.
Speaking: tips by criterion
- Fluency and Coherence
- Answer, then extend: a reason, an example, a contrast. At band 8 repetition and self-correction are only occasional, so keep going rather than restarting sentences.
- Lexical Resource
- Paraphrase when a word escapes you, and use idiomatic language only where it fits naturally. A precise ordinary word beats a showy one used wrongly.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- Mix past, present and hypothetical forms as the question needs them. Band 8 asks for a wide range used flexibly, with most sentences error-free.
- Pronunciation
- Stress the word that matters in each sentence and let your voice rise and fall. Being easy to understand throughout is what the top bands ask for.
