How the marks become a band

Listening and Reading each have 40 questions worth one mark, and the table turns your total into a band. The exact number of marks for a band varies slightly from one test version to the next.

IELTS publishes these averages:

Listening
16 correct is band 5, 23 is band 6, 30 is band 7, 35 is band 8.
Academic Reading
15 correct is band 5, 23 is band 6, 30 is band 7, 35 is band 8.
General Training Reading
15 correct is band 4, 23 is band 5, 30 is band 6, 35 is band 7.

Questions people ask

What band is 30 out of 40 in IELTS Listening?

Band 7.0. Band 7.5 starts at 32 correct.

How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in IELTS Reading?

30 out of 40 in Academic Reading, and 34 in General Training Reading.

What band is 25 out of 40 in IELTS Reading?

Band 6.0 in Academic Reading and 5.0 in General Training Reading.

Why does General Training Reading need more marks?

It has its own table, which asks for more correct answers for the same band: 30 correct is 7.0 in Academic Reading but 6.0 in General Training.

Is there a chart for Writing and Speaking?

No. Examiners give those bands against published criteria, so there are no marks out of 40 to convert.
