What is IELTS 7 in TOEFL?
In the 2025 study, IELTS Academic 7.0 overall lined up with old TOEFL totals of 91 to 99. ETS compares it with 5.0 on the new 1-6 scale.
What is IELTS 6.5 in TOEFL?
The 2025 study links IELTS Academic 6.5 with old TOEFL totals of 81 to 90, and ETS compares it with 4.5 on the new scale.
What OET score equals IELTS 7?
No study converts one to the other. Where the NMC asks for IELTS 7 (Writing 6.5), it asks for OET 350 (Writing 300). Australia's proficient English is IELTS 7 in each skill or OET 350, 360, 380 and 360.
Is the 2010 IELTS-TOEFL table still right?
The 2025 study replaces it. Use the 2025 figures.

What it does
Line up IELTS Academic with TOEFL from the 2025 study of people who took both, and see what OET score authorities ask for beside each IELTS level.
IELTS Academic overall and section bands 4.0 to 9.0, old TOEFL iBT totals and sections, and new TOEFL 1-6 bands. For OET, the published minimums of the NMC, GMC, Ahpra and Australia's Home Affairs.
Method
- IELTS to TOEFL uses the 2025 concordance study by ETS and the IELTS partners: 969 people took both tests at centres and 937 were analysed. It links each IELTS band to a range of old TOEFL scores.
- TOEFL on the new 1-6 scale uses ETS's own comparison with IELTS Academic, in use from 21 January 2026.
- From TOEFL to IELTS we list every IELTS band whose linked range includes your score.
- For OET there is no concordance. We put side by side what each authority asks for in IELTS and in OET.
- The one TOEFL score shown is ETS's new-scale comparison, rounded to the nearest half band where more than one applies.
