What is band 4.5 on the old scale?
ETS compares 4.5 with old totals from 86 to 94 and names 90 as the comparable score.
How is the TOEFL overall band worked out?
It is the average of your four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average of 5.125 rounds to 5.0 and 5.25 rounds up to 5.5.
Can I convert TOEFL to IELTS?
ETS publishes a comparison with IELTS Academic, but it describes groups of test takers, not what one person would score. Check which tests your university accepts instead of converting.

How we work this out
What it does
Turn a new 1-6 TOEFL band into the old 0-120 range, or an old total into a band, using ETS's own comparison.
TOEFL iBT scores on the 1-6 scale used from 21 January 2026 and the old 0-120 scale, overall and by section, with 2024 percentiles on the old scale and CEFR levels.
Method
- A new band is looked up in ETS's comparison table, which gives the range of old totals it lines up with. A 5.0 lines up with 95 to 106.
- An old total is looked up the other way: 100 sits in the 95 to 106 range, so it compares with 5.0.
- With four section bands, the overall is their average rounded to the nearest half band, with a quarter rounding up (ETS's rule: an average of 5.25 gives 5.5).
- Old-scale percentiles come from ETS's 2024 score data; between printed rows we draw a straight line.
- The one old-scale score shown is the middle of the old totals ETS places beside your band.
