What band is 30 out of 40 in IELTS Reading?
Band 7.0 in Academic Reading and band 6.0 in General Training Reading, on the published indicative tables. A slightly harder or easier paper could move it by half a band.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in Listening?
The published table gives band 7.0 for 30 or 31 correct answers out of 40, and 7.5 from 32.
Why is General Training Reading different from Academic Reading?
The two Reading tests have their own tables. For the same number of correct answers, General Training Reading gives a lower band: 30 correct is 7.0 in Academic but 6.0 in General Training.
Can I work out a Writing or Speaking band this way?
No. Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners against four criteria each, so there is no correct-answer count to convert.

What it does
Turn correct answers out of 40 into an IELTS band for Listening, Academic Reading or General Training Reading, with the range a real paper could give.
Correct answers out of 40 in IELTS Listening, Academic Reading and General Training Reading, from band 4.0 upwards where the published tables start.
Method
- The band is read from IDP's published indicative table for that section.
- IELTS.org also publishes average anchors (for example, 30 correct in Academic Reading is on average band 7). Between anchors we draw a straight line as a second opinion.
- The range takes every band the table and the anchors give within the number of marks you choose either side of your score, rounded outwards to half bands.
