Questions people ask
Is IELTS Writing Task 2 worth more than Task 1?
Yes. IELTS says Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing score.
How many criteria are there in IELTS Writing?
Four for each task: Task Achievement (Task Response in Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. They count equally.
If I get 6 in Task 1 and 7 in Task 2, what is my Writing band?
(6 + 2 × 7) ÷ 3 = 6.67. IELTS does not publish the rounding of that average; rounded down it is 6.5.

How we work this out
What it does
Pick your four criterion bands for each task, or your two task bands, to get your Writing band.
IELTS Academic and General Training Writing: Task 1 and Task 2, each marked 0 to 9 on four criteria.
Method
- Each task's band is the average of its four criteria, which IELTS weights equally.
- The Writing band is (Task 1 + 2 × Task 2) ÷ 3, because IELTS says Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1.
- IELTS reports Writing in whole and half bands but does not publish how an average in between is rounded. We round down to the half band below, so the band shown is our estimate whenever the average falls between half bands.
