Questions people ask

Can I combine two IELTS results for the NMC?

Yes, two full IELTS Academic tests taken within 12 months of each other. Across both you need 7, 7, 6.5 and 7, and no score in either test can be below 6.5 (6 in Writing).

Does One Skill Retake count for the NMC?

No. The NMC needs all four skills tested in the same sitting, so a One Skill Retake result cannot be used.

Is there an overall score for the NMC?

No. The NMC sets a score for each skill and no overall band.

How old can my IELTS be?

Both tests must be no more than two years old on the day the NMC assesses your complete application, not the day you start it.

How we work this out

What it does

Enter your first IELTS Academic result: see the lowest scores your next full test needs to combine with it for the NMC.

The NMC's IELTS Academic route for nurses and midwives: two full test-centre sittings (paper, computer or UKVI Academic) combined.

Method

  1. Across both tests you need 7 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing.
  2. Every score in both tests must be at least 6.5 (Listening, Reading, Speaking) or 6 (Writing).
  3. So where your first test already has the full score, the next test needs only the floor; everywhere else it needs the full score.
  4. The tests must be within 12 months of each other and both no more than two years old when the NMC assesses your complete application.
