How the range is worked out

  1. Each question has a difficulty level from our IELTS question bank. A middle-level question is one an average IELTS candidate gets right about two times in three.
  2. We find the ability that best explains how many you got right, allowing for how hard those questions were.
  3. We place that ability on the band scale using the average and spread IELTS publishes for Academic Reading (2024-2025: average band 6.3), and round outward to half bands.
  4. Next to the band we show the marks out of 40 it takes on IELTS's published Academic Reading table. With 14 questions the range is wide; a full 40-question test narrows it.

Questions

Is this an official IELTS test?

No. The passages and questions are our own, written to the Academic Reading format, and each one was solved independently by two solvers. IELTS publishes official sample tests on ielts.org.

How accurate is the band?

It is a range, because 14 questions cannot pin down one band. About two times in three your level sits inside it. A full timed Reading test narrows it a lot.

How long does it take?

26 minutes for 14 questions on two passages. The real Academic Reading test is 60 minutes for 40 questions on three passages.

Do I need an account?

No. Your marks and your likely band show straight away. A free account adds the question types to fix first, a two-week plan and every answer explained, and keeps them.

Is this Academic or General Training?

Academic. General Training Reading uses different texts and a different marks-to-band table, so a General Training score would read higher for the same marks.

What is a good IELTS Reading band?

It depends on what you need it for. Many UK universities ask for 6.5 or 7.0 in each skill. In 2024-2025 the average Academic Reading band was 6.3.
