Worked example: four skills to one overall band
Add the four skill bands, divide by four, then round to the nearest half band.
| Candidate | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Average | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.0 | 7.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| Second | 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.125 | 6.0 |
The first candidate's bands add up to 25, and 25 ÷ 4 = 6.25. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, so the overall band is 6.5. The second candidate's add up to 24.5, an average of 6.125. That is nearer 6.0 than 6.5, so the overall band is 6.0.
